Shirley founded Outreach which began as a Sarah Lawrence College course where teachers and students developed techniques for storytelling and creating original material. It included a free Saturday morning program for the children of S.L.C. faculty and staff and for the greater Yonkers community. A senior program was then added. Alan Lang worked with Shirley and then continued to build the program and oversee it.
