The Paper Bag Players were founded in 1958 by Judy Martin, Shirley, Sudi Bond, and Remy Charlip. Music was by Donald Ashwander. The ensemble developed material using simple items like paper towel rolls, refrigerator boxes, and lampshades for hats. Remy spoke to the Living Theatre about having The Paper Bags perform. Overnight the piece reached so many people and became very popular among the New York City art community. Shows would go on to perform at various venues for children and people of all ages. A new company continues to develop pieces today.
